Woven Optical Illusions
Woven Optical Illusions - Pattern and Design from 4 to 24 Shafts
by Stacey Harvey-Brown and Katharina Kronig
What a feast for the eyes! Optical illusions abound in all forms of artwork spanning the ages, so why not a book devoted to achieving optical illusions in the woven cloth?
This book explains the technical reasoning of how illusory effects are created, and how to incorporate those ideas into weaving. Optical effects are broadly categorized into 5 main chapters. Each chapter explains a certain group of effects, and how the illusion works. The next step is to detail how this technique could be incorporated into weaving drafts, and then ultimately finished samples.
While this book accommodates weavers at all levels, it is not a weaving how-to book, but rather how specific ideas can be developed that create various illusions including 3D (creating depth), phantom effects (shapes or colors that are not there), tilt illusions (straight lines that look slanted or curvy) and more. If you are drawn to weaving with intriguing graphic designs, this book is for you.
While the book includes patterns for 4 to 24 shafts, there is an emphasis on 8 shaft looms. There are approximately 600 color images of artwork, samples, and drafts. And yes, the gallery of the work of 16 artists is awe-inspiring!
